THE FEDERAL CAMPAIGN.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.! (Received 2. 10.50 a.m.) Sydney, March 2. The Federal campaign is in ful SwiDg, and the voice of the political charmer is heard the length and breadth of the Commonwealth. Th< various parties are hard at work closing up the ranks and from largo crops of aspirants are selecting the bunches fcr the House and Senate. Unity is the burden and declared desideratum of every speech, but the ideas united are wondrously mixed, and deeply tingrd in most cases by party predilections and circumscribed by State boundaries. Every State has its pot question. In New South Wales and Victoria, tthanks chiefly to Mr. Eeid, assisted by a bind of abla lieutenants, and with an influential prestsupport, the old Freetrade and Protection cry, which is beiflg forced in the front of the battle, is being made a fierce and bitter on •

In Queensland interest centres ronad black labour, one of the most difficult problems the Federal Government have to deal with, Mr. Barton is at present making an extended tour in the Northern State with the double object of studying the question, and convincing the sugar growers of tbe desirableness of s white Australian. South Australians have the transcontinental railway development in the Northern Territory as a fighting platform.

The Australian campaign is being [carried on less ardently though a special tariff concession granted the State under the Commonwealth Bill is regarded as a 6ouroe of much congratulation.

i Tasmania™ are loyally Federal, but have a grievance in the want of more substantial representation in the Federal Cabinet, and their candidates] are strenuously voicing that want. The Labcur Party are vigorously putting forward their claims in thej various States, and are providing a good quota of candidates.
