Wrod, President of the Canterbury Chamber, was in the chair, and the fo lowing delegates were present— Auckhndl Messrs* D. 11. Caldwell and A. B. Robertson; Dunedin, Meters. J. L. Denniston, A. T. Patterson, and Jt. T. Wheeler, jun.; Westport, Messrs. A. D. Bayfield and T. Baillie; Wnnganui, Mr. T. R. Griffith*; Weill ngton, Mr. R. Reid; Palmerston North, Messrs. E. 0. Hurley andG. Hirsch ; Invercargill, Mr. A, H. Turnliull; Fielding, Mr. J. G. Cobbe; Canterbury, Messrs. W. Wood, K. W, Roper, W. Chrystall, G. T. Booth, and V. Waymouth; Nelson, Mr. G. Laurenson. The President gave an interesting address. Discussion of a motion by Mr. Bogor relative to commercial reciprocity with Australia; and of a motion by Mr, Griffiths dealing with judges and magistrates salaries and tenure of offioa wai postponed till Thursday. A vote of congratulation to the Post-master-General on reduction of postal rates, and urging the institution of a uniform rate of H per word for telegrams was carried. January 10, A vote was passed in favour of tho federeration of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce, the Wellington Chamber being appointed to draw up a constitution and bye-laws. The motion relating to oommsmiai reciprocity was withdrawn. It was resolved that representation be made to the bank authorities, pointing out the inconvenience of doling banks on non-public holidays. Chhistchubch, January 10. At the Chamber of Oommerco Conference this afternoon, on resunaing ( Mr, A. 8, Patterson (Dunedin), read a paper on " New Zealand and Trado Expansion," and moved: —(a) That in opinion of this Conference a wider extension of New Zealand trade is a Batter of national importance, and ought to engage the serious attention of the Government and commercial community ; a wisely planned system of granting steam subsidies in furtherance of this object is a sound and nec&ssary policy, and a proper use for national funds, (b) That this (Joj»fe-w» expresses its strong appreciation approval of the action of the Government, in establishing a Department Oommerco and indnstries, and hopes that tho new department will make the extension of trade the foremost object of its existence. Mr. Hirsch seconded the motion which was carried. Mr. Hirsch brought forward tho libject cif education, and after some disoussion it was held over till next day. Mr. Waymoutb, in the abeenoe of Mr. A. De B. Brandon, Wellington, moved, "That in the opinion of this Oonferenoe,it : mf durable m that | improved and tewarioi postalfacilitie* be provided between this colonyand Europe and America; (2) that in aS ~ postal contracts preference be givoa to services carried on under tho British flag; (3) that with this view the Government bo urged to endeavour to arrange for a monthly naval service between New Zealand and Vancouver—(2) a weekly moil service between New Zealand and Australia, timed to catch the regular we-kljr service between Australia and Europe via Brindisi. Mr R. T. Wheeler (Dunedin) seconded tho motion vMob after considerable disotusion was carried.| .. t - Mr Reid moved—"That it bea recommendation from th's Conference to the Oceanic Steamship Company of Baa Francisco, that with a view to footor and promote trade betweeu the United States and the various ports of this oolony, and following precedent of th& Shaw Savill and Albion Company, the N.Z.
