N.P. PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.

This young but flourishing Society gives its second concert at the Theatre Royal this evening, the programme of whi«h will be found in another column. Those who recolleot the previous entertainment will do so with much pleasure, and will naturally look forward to that improvement which should be apparent after the lapse of an interval sufficiently long to enable the effect of carefully supervised practice to bear good fruit. On Wednesday evening a full rehearsal was givon at the Theatre Royal at which the orchestra assisted, and it afforded a Tory good indication of tho nature of the performance which is to be given this evening. It was evident that tho conductor (Mr. Fletcher) had his chorus and orchestra well in baud, and as a consequence a capital effect was obtained, especially after one or two slight defects had been remedied. Tho cantata "May Day" is full of pleasing music, the alto parts being particularly swtot and receiving ample justice. The orchestra gives a special finish to the vocal scare and considerably heightens the ofi'oct, especially osj jit is woll balanced and cousists of ex-1 cellent musicians, led by Mr. llaigh. lu the second part all the items are of a nature to find favour with an audience, and we anticipate they will be received with the greatest pleasure,

There is one song which it aw* to t*JN§§i down the home, end that ii "«(K| Promise of Life," to be «ng by mm Holdsworth, whose nerformaos Hii!| fur to be a revelation to a New Pq%| mouth audience. As both Miss ton and Mrs. Pope take part in lb

accompaniments, that importaat pttt of the perfonaance is sere to totoNt . efficient, and Mr. OookVs vialfai ipto will be a great attraction. If then are any number of lovers of g*od awb ;in New Plymouth, the Theatre Bmftl should be wet! filled this evening, M the concert ii decidedly atww the average in point of merit and variety.
