The Daily News. MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1900. MR. NEWTON KING'S AWAKINO SALE.
The importance of the step taken by Mr. Newton King in establishing stock sales at Awakino is so great and has such an important efleet on the future of New Plymouth in particular and North Taranaki generally that no apology is needed for referring thereto in the leading columns of this journal. Newspapers do not, as a rule, refer to the doings of business firms in their leading columns, but the results which are certain to follow this action of one ufthe leading firms of the provincial district are so far reaohing'in their effects that they become of great public i interest. In this colony the establishment of public sahyards and the holding.of periodical sales is recognised as one of the signs of advancement, and ■the gathering together of the settlers at these s-i!es is of immense valua to the district in which they are held. In this respect Mr. Newton King has done more to forward the interest of Taranaki than perhaps any other one ndividual. HundreJs of settlers, but :or the facilities placi d in their reach by Mr. Newton King, onld not hav 'liken advai.tage of thy dairying system tvhich has done so mu«h for the dieIn many cases be has practically supplied on c-.'udii nearly tho whole of itho cows which -enabled some of the dauy factories to start. No doubt the business has paid him, we sincerely hepe s >, still but fur the risks bo ran many of the f.tetoriis would novor l»vt started, and he in entitled totha cret'i and all the profit his foresight enabled him to secure. We know that at Stratford the determined manner in which he maintained his sales there did more than is generally known to build up the foundations upon which tho success o 1 that flourishing centre is based. For
years the sales there were carried on at a loss, but the confHer.ce shown by Mr. King in the future of the town and district by the continuance of the sales I ■lid a great deal to inspiro others with
