A British subaltern demanded that itj should be re-hoisted, but the Russians, outnumbering the British, covered the party with their rifles, forbidding them to stir, The guard communicated with General Read, who sent a force of 200 mqp demanding an apology and &- hoisting the Union Jack, intimating that refussd to do so would be onsidered an act of war.
