GENERAL WHITE ON THE N.Z. DEFENCE SCHEME.
[PBB PRBSS ASSOCIATION.] Chbistchurch, November 26. The following letter has been received by the Premier from General White:—"Gibraltar, September 10— Sir, I have had the honor to receive the defence scheme laid before the New Zealand House of Representatives on July 20th last, and b?g to thank you for sending it to me. The value of military training in our colonies have been brought home to us with peculiar force by the loyal support tbat New Zealand and other colonies have given the Imperial forces in Siuth Africa, and no war could possibly afford a more convincing example of the powerful defence that may bo organised in evisn a small population than what the Boers have accomplished by a system of careful fore-arming, combined with organisation and military training. I have not the experience of your local conditions that would enable me to offer an opinion upon the details of your scheme but it seems to promise excellent r suits, and I hope tho money may be forthcoming to give it a fair trial. I have, etc.—G. S. White, General."
