THE OPAKU RESERVE.
In connection with the question of the Opaku Reserve and the action of the Taranaki members of the House, a meeting of the delegates from the High School Board and Education Board has been called for Friday to consider the matter. In the meantime the following telegram has been sent: — Hon. W.O.Walker, Minister of Education, Wellington. Delegates of Education Board and High School Board meeting Friday, consider proposals of Taranaki Parlia-,. mentary representatives re Opaku Reserve. D, McAllum, Chairman of Education Board, N. K. MacDiarmid, Chairman of High School Board of Governors. At the meeting on Friday, the whole : position will be discussed and the cooperation of the Wanganui Education Board invited in any action that may be decided upon. The meeting has been fixed for Friday to enable Mr. Mackay of Midhirst to attend. VICTORIA COLLEGE CLAIMS THE RE- . SERVE FOR UNIVERSITY PURPOSES. 1 [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, September 19. The Victoria College Council discussed the question of the Opaku Reserve in the Taranaki district to-day, i The speakers claimed that the reserve was sot aside for university purposes, ' and the fact of its locality did not entitle Taranaki to claim the exclusive \ benefit from it. The accumulated funds : were said to amount to £2854, and the ■ yearly rental to i>295. Presently the ' latter would bring in three or four times as much. A resolution was passd calling the attention of the Govern- ', ment to the conditions of the Statute under which tha reserve was set aside, and asking them not to promote any legislation to divert the endowment from its proper purpose. A committee was appointed to formulate a scheme for univeasity extension lectures in the towns of the university district, from Napier and New Plymouth to Greymouth, -
