The general feeling of j appreciation of the honour done Australia was voiced by the various Premiers, Sir W. J. Lyne states that a couple of months ago he cabled to London asking that a Eoyal personage might visit the colonies in connection with the initiation of the Commonwealth. -He also asked if Mr. Ohamberlain could find time to attend the festivities, but Mr. Ohamberlain replied that it was impossible at the present juncture for tiim to accept. The Lieutenant-Governor has cabled Mr. Ohamberlain that the Victorian people offer their most cordial thanks and express enthusiastic gratification to the Queen for this last act of her never failing self-sacrifice, sympathy, and gracious consideration for Australia, as well as for all her people; to the Duke and Duchess of York for their noble appreciation of Australia's great act of union, and their personal sacrifice and good will to mark it with splendour in the eyes of the world; and to Her Majesty's Ministers for their great Imperial wisdom which is --thus made once again conspicuously manifest. The Agents-General who have been interviewed are delighted with the visit, which is of great Imperial significance and a vital date in Australia's history. The Government has cabled to Mr. . Ohamberlain withjreference to the visit of the, Duke and Duchess of York as follows: " The Government and people of Queensland send grateful thanks to Her Majesty for this signal manifestation of readiness to anticipate the wishes of heraubjects in all portions of the Empire. They fully recognise the spirit which leads her to so.great a sacrifice as to give this effectaal proof of her sense of the identity of Australian interests with those of the Mother Country. They desire also to thank the Duke and Duchess ,of York for their good will in undertaking to preside on an occasion of such historical importance, which will be so greatly augmented by their presence, and can assure them they will receive such a welcome in Australia, for their awn sakes, and as representatives of Her Majesty, as can only proceed from a loyal happy people. At the same time they congratulate Her Majesty's advisers on the arrangement which is so happily calculated to quicken the sense of intimate relations by which various parts of the Empire are associated in one organised
