Five thousand perished at Galveston, many of the ruins being burnt in order to cremate the bodies within them. Scores of survivors became frenzied from thirst and died. Others lost their reason. Belief measures are active and efficient. The troops at Galveston arrested 100 drunken negroes, 43 ef whom were conrt-martialled and shot for possessing loot. One of the culprits had in his pocket twenty-three human fingers with rings on them. I TERRIBLE LOSS OF LIFE.
