A GLANCE AT THE ILLUSTRATEDS.

In the New Zealand Illustrated Magazine there is a very pithy story entitled "Brown, Y. 0.," written by Mr. Edgar M. Dell, .of New Plymouth. To all those who are familiar with the author's prose and poetry the glimpse of South African warfare afforded by I the short and interesting story will be found to be conceived in that happy style which Mr. Dell has again and again proved to be his own. The grim humour of the hero is brought out in most artistio counterpoise to his indomitable pluck and sang froid, while the inspiring motive for his cool bravery may be gathered from the finale " There's no need for thanks; I've got the V.O. and a Sergeant's billet, you know, and my girl is pretty sure t® be sugar on me now." Mr, Dell decidedly hits the popular taste in this story, and it is to be hoped that others from the same pen will find their way into the magazine. The Auckland Weekly for the 7th inst. contains some particularly good pictures of the prize winners at the Auckland Kennel Club's Show; an excellent group of the Otago football team. The views of the Paris Exhibi-, tion are not only large, but very clear. The returned invalided troopers also find a place, and there are several photographs of the New Zealanders in South Africa. The Weekly Press, to hand per Miss Betford, has some well chosen photos of scenes in the South Sea Islands, a large panoramic views of Waitara, Nelson, Masterton, and Arrowtown, Otago, and of many other interesting subjects, such as golfing, football, etc. The Canterbury Times, also received per.Miss Betford, has for a supplement a nicely-toned copy of Mr. J. M. Madden's painting of the Obis* Gorge, while the general illustrations are made up of some very interesting views of " Kruger's Best," the new air ship, South African War episodes, some old Ohirese scenes, gold dredging, and a very good collection of photographs of some of the mayors of Canterbury and the Morton Football Olub,
