THE RAILWAY QUESTION.
[ LOCAL MEMBER'S VIEWS. Speaking on the question of the railway in the recent interview with Ministers, Mr. Symes (Egmont) said that the route for the line had been settled by Act of Parliament. It had been suggested, however, that there should be a deviation to avoid the wilderness of which so much had been heard. It was said that there could be a deviation which would go through some of the best land on the route. He urged the claims of the Whangamomona settlers for road or railway communication. That settlement would, if its success were maintained, be one of the grandest monuments of the work of the former Minister of Lands, Mr. John McKenzie. But unless it were given assured communication with the outside world it would be a failure,
Mr. Smith (Faranaki) declared that he was convinced that a railway by the Stratford or Ngaire route would come in due time. But ho also hold that it would be the best line of policy to first construct the lino between Wellington and Auckland, and leave the matter of branch lines for the future.
