COLONIALS DEFEAT THE BOERS. '. Received 5, 9.12 a.m. London, September 4. A body of Colonial troops marching from Zeerusb to Krugersdorp were stubbornly opposed. The Boers lost heavily. Major Brooke, with 100 men, defeated the Boers, at Kraib railway station between Heidelberg and Grelingstad. Five of the enemy were killed. GENERAL BULLER'S ADVANCE ON LYDENBURG. TROOPS IN A TIGHT PLACE BUT BEHAVE MAGNIFIOENTLY. LADYBRAND STILL HOLDING OUT. (Received 5,10 p.m.) London, September 5. Commandant Botha, with several thousand men and four big guns, is holding a strong position overlooking Lydenburg, and is checking General Buller, whose army is in a basin. Throughout Saturday the British were under a heavy-shell fire, and behaved magnificently. A composite regiment, with a battery, was so placed as to be exposed to an accurate fire, and was unable to retreat until night. The infantry erjgagfld the Boers, who were concealed in creeks and scrub between ridges. General lan Hamilton has been sent to assist General Buller to turn the enemy's position. Lidy brand is still resist iog. A third iaager and supplies were burned to prevent capture.
