THE STOKE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL.

PUBLIC MEETING AX NELSON. i I [PBB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, September 3. A crowded public meeting was held here to-night in the Provincial Hall, . to consider the Commissioner's report ; and the Government's proposed reforms , in connection with St. Mary's school. ! The meeting was practically unani- , mous, no dissentient voices being heard i in favour of the Government assuming ' the full control of the school. The following resolutions were passed: | " That the report of the Commissioners : is viewed with great dissatisfaction, i their conclusions being incompatible with the evidence, also that the pro- ( posed reforms of the Government are totally inadequate." " That whereas the enquiry has proved that the management of the school as a private denominational institution lias ie-1 tu gross abuses being practised and the proposed reforms give no security whatever, that the same state of things will not again arise, it is considered necessary that the Government should assume the direct control and acquire the property as a State institution, as the most satisfactory solution of the matter." " That in view of the new disclosures the meeting appeals to the Government to withdraw all financial support from this, and all similar institutions not under the direct control of the State, and the meeting pledges itself to support members of Parliament endeavouring to secure reform." " That copies of these resolutions be forwarded to the Government, the membars of the city and sumunding constituencies." That the thanks of the meeting be accorded to Messrs. Rout, Harley and Pip°r, members of the Charitable .Aid Board, for their pub'ic ] spirit and courage in procuring the enquiry. The meeting lasted throe hours and much hostile feeling was evidenced towards the management of the institution. The speakers acknowledged that the resolutions involved all; I Protestant similar institutions being I I brought under direct State control, and 1 1 considered this also desirable. ;
