PLOT AGAINST LORD ROBERTS.
COURT-MARTIAL ON CARDNA. DETAILS 01? PLOT. (Received 19, 9 p.m.) London, August 18. General Marchall is President of the Court-martial on Gardca, who is young, cool, well-dressed, and assisted by a lawyer. Burgher de Toit deposed that early in July Cardna asked him to assist- in an enterprise which was to stagger Europe. He discussed the plot, which was to seize all the officers in Pretoria with the help of 250 residents, while Oirdna rushed Lord Roberts' house and abducted him, and then handed Lord .Roberts to Botha, behind Beckett's Kopje. He showed Botha's cypher letter in proof of genuineness, When asked about the oath of neutrality he said it was nothing, and discovery only meant transportation to Ceylon. De Toit declined and communicated the plot to the constabulary. Captain Duhan, the prosecutor, found a key to Botha's letter on Cardna. Lieutenant Kruger, of the Imperial Transvaal Police, translated the cypher:—" Proceed to work, be courageous, I will not leave you in the lurch." Kruger and Marcus, late field cornets, refused to join, FREE STATE OFWOER PLEADS GUILTY. Received 20, 1.30 a.m. London, August 18. Lieut. Hans Cardna, of the Staats Artillery, charged with breaking his paro'e and plotting to kidnap Lord Roberts and his officers, pleaded guilty. The Court-Martial advised the withdrawal of the plea. Sensational evidence had previously been given.
