TONGAPORUTU.
(fkom our own cobkespondent.) The winter is gone, and on the whole was a good one. The spring so far has been excellent. The grass shows signs of growth, where light stocked. All kinds of stock are looking well. Fruit trees are beginning to bud, and gardens beginning to" receive attention. Bushfelling is in full swing-a large aiea being cut down this season. Bushmen are scarce, and receiving good pay. A considerable number -of men are road-making a few widening the curves on Mt. Messenger, while a good many are on the Greenland Road to the Upper Waitara. Surveyors are at work in the back country getting blocks ready for settlement. There is a rush after land all along the coast—- : there being a prospect of the railway coming this way and bringing the whole coast in touch with Auckland and New Plymouth. The bridge over the river seems to be in a awkward state. Eight months ago it was reported that "the plans were completed and that tenders would be called immediately; now it appears that the Government have not yet taken the plans in hand. The King Country problem—liquor versus prohibition, is much discussed, one party holding that licensed houses will do away with sly grog-selling, while the other party hold that it will make matters worse.
