THE MAIL SERVICE.

AUSTRALIAN PRESS OPINIONS. [PJJB PBUSS ASSOOIAIIOJI.J Received 9, 5.30 p.m. Melbourne, July 9. y The Age considers " that Mr. Crick was no doubt fully justified in declining the 'Frisco subsidy. Whether Mr, Ward will respond to Mr. Spreeklei it doubtful, as it woull be in direct opposition to the past policy of that colony, which has been to stimulate, foster, and develnp its trade and industry by a protective policy. Considering the marine interests of New South Wales, it appeals very probable that Mr. Click's action will be fully endorsed. It is not denied that the Oceanic Company promise to improve the 'Frisco service, but it is tit the expense of Australasian interests; hence the question naturally arises whether it is justifiable to sacrifice tbe latter. Victoria is not a contributor to tlio 'Frisco service, but has local interests in the Vancouver service. If „ the question arises as to what service 1 Federated Australia s' ould support, it will certainly be one represent'.ug looal and not foreign interests." The Argus says:—" Victoria has no present interest in negotiating for a new 'Frisco service, but, under Federa* tion, subsidies to the mail services have to be paid by the Commonwealth. The Victorians are entitled to criticise, and to grant a subsidy would be helping the Oceanic Company to fight the established lines between Australia and New Zealand, which would be unfair, liecause the (Oceanic is already effectually protected against competition."
