THE PACIFIC ISLANDS.
NBW SOUTH WALES PUTS IN A CLAIM. [PHR PREBB ASSOCIATION.] (Received 7, noon.) Sydney, July 7. Mr. Burns, of the Philips shipping firm, has written to the Chamber of Commerce stating that if annexation of the Pacific Islands, as proposed by Hon. R. J. Seddon, is desirable, it should be with the colony having the closest commercial relations, namely, New South Wales. In the event of New Zealand subsidising steamers the whole of the tirade will go to that colony. Captain Hill, a member of the Legislative Council, Fiji, at present in Sydney, says if Mr. Seddon's proposal is carried out it will ruin the Island trade as far as Australia is concerned. He points out that the Americans are subsidising vessels for Tahiti, and may possibly come further south. He expresses the hope that Federated Australia will not allow foreigners to have all their own way, but give him " a run for the money." He hardly believes that New South Wales will sit quietly down while New Zealand reaps the harvest.
