The Daily News. SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 1900. TARANAKI'S DAIRY PRODUCE EXPORT.

The figures from time to time furnished by the Department of Agriculture showing the particulars and proportions of the colony's exports make most interesting and encouraging readj ing for all who are concerned in the prosperity of our land. To residents of the Taranaki' province this applies in a peculiar degree, seeing that by far the largest proportion of one of the most valuable and useful of all colonial exports is contributed by this province. We refer, of course, to our staple product—dairy produce. The latest returns (those for the months of April and May) show that the total exports from the colony for the two months were: Butter, 15,017cwt. valued at £53,387. The following table shows at a glance the amounts and value contributed by the chief centres of export. Port. Butter. Oheese. Owt. £ Cwt. £ N.Plymouth 11,050 49,010 5,680 12,067 Dunedin ... 1,816 7,141 4,547 9,797 ■Wellington.. 961 3,941 2,868 6,739 Christchurch 430 1,463 1,548 3,064 Auckland ... 344 1,675 717 1,551 ' lnvercargill..

The balance is made up by small shipments from various other ports. An analysis of the foregoing figures is both • interesting and instructive; it shows that New Plymouth exported nearly three times as much butter as all the other ports of the colony put together, and, what is most flattering evidence of the quality of our produce, the value was more than three times that of the butter shipped from 'other parts of the colony. The figures work out thus : Cwt. Value. New Plymouth 11,050 £49,010 All other ports 3,962 £15,858 The position held by Taranaki in this export is, indeed, a proud one, as not only does our province produce by far the greater proportion of the butter exported, but this is of such a quality that its value averages 88s per cwt. against 80s and an insignificant fraction which is the average for the rest of the colony. No better evidence of the prosperity of our province can possibly be required than is afforded by tuch returns as these.
