GOVERNMENT VALUATIONS.
AN IMPORTANT POINT. (PKR PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, June 8. At the Assessment Court to-day, strong opposition was made against the Government valuation in certain local districts. For the objectors it was urged that where there was no alteration in the conditions of property since last valuation there was no power under the S'atute to make any alteration in value. For the Department it was urged that the Government Valuation of Land Act did away with anyj stated period of valuation, and that under section 7 of the. Act a new valuation could be made. This was combatted by the objectors' counsel as' against the spirit of the Act and the intention of the Legislature. The Magistrate confessed his willingness to state a case for the Supreme Court, but the representative of the Department said he could not commit himself to agree to that, especially as he understood it was the intention of the Government to revise the Act during the forthcoming session. Ultimately an adjournment was made until Wednesday. The Magistrate said he would strongly urge both sides to go to the superior Court, as a decision ceuld then be obtained for the whole colony at a trifliDg expense,
