RAILWAY CONCESSIONS.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—You direct " Enquirer," in Thursday's issue, to Mr, Dutbie'e speech for a better understanding of ttie concessions of the Railway Department. I have re-read the very short synopsis of said speech given in the News of Wednesday. Many of your readers can't reach the long speech, which might give us particular*, ao we are little the wiseryet. Mr. Dutbie thinks all will be rejoiced to learn of the concessions proposed etc.,—but sum. up by saying that the reduced •ingle fares will be of no advantage, whatever. There ig not much in tb% for the general publio to rejoios about, Not many take considerable single journeys with no intention of getting back to the starting point If one takes a trip, for instance, to Wanganui, by the ordinary trains, as preferable to the nrowded excursion trains, the cost will now be 17s lOd, as against 19s 4d on the old return system, saving Is 6d only. To Hawera the return will be 8s instead of 8s lid. Only 4s 8d will be saved on a secondclass trip to Wellington, being 42s as against the former 46s Bd7 And U you take a first-class ticket for so long a journey it will cost 63s as against the former 70s. In this matter of passenger rates, the benefit is, at " Enquirer " says, more apparent than real. Our Minister for Railways is certainly almost as clever as bis Chief in making things appear as they are not.—l am. etc., Anothkb "EyonntEß"
