QUEENS BIRTHDAY HONOURS.

The following brief notices of some of the more prominent recipients of the Queen's Birthday Honours reported in our cable columns yesterday morning will be of interest: — The Right Hon. Lord Michael Morris, who received a life peerage on his appointment as a Lord of Appeal in ordinary in 1889, was bom in 1827 and graduated at Trinity College, Dub lin, in 1847, being finstsenior moderator and gold medallist. He has held the offices of Solicitor-General and At-torney-General for Ireland, was made a judge in 18G7, and Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, 20 years later. In 1885, he received the honour of a baronetcy. His life peerage has now been converted into a full peerage. The Right Hon. Sir Peter O'Brien, P.C., Q.C., who has received a peerage is the son of the late John O'Brien, M.P., and was born in 1842. He was Solicitor-General for Ireland in 1888, and Attorney-General the year following, when he was appointed Lord Chief Justice, and was created a Baronet two years later. Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal was formerly well known as Sir Donald Alexander Smith, G.C.M.G. He was a prominent member of the Deminion Parliament of Canada for many years, and largely interested in Canadian Railways. In 1896 he was appointed High Commissioner for Canada in London, being raised to the peerage in the following year. The Right Honourable Lord Justice Fitz-Gibbon has for many years been a P.O. (Ireland) and has held several legal and judicial appointments. ' The Earl of Jersey, G. 0.8., was born in 1845, and succeeded to the title in 1859. On Lord Carrington'a retirement from the Governorship ofj New South Wales, Lord Jersey received the appointment which he held from 1890 to 1893.

Sir Wm. Conyngham Greene, K. 0.8., has been in the diplomatic service from 1877, and since 1896 Charge d'Affaires (British Agent) at Pretoria. Lord Lamington,G.O,M.G.,Governor of Queensland, was born in 1860, and succeeded to the title in 1880. He received his present appointment in 1895. Sir W. J. Lyne, K.0.M.G., Premier of New South Wales, was the mover of a vote of want-of-confidence in the Government of that colony, mainly on financial questions, last September. The vote being carried, Mr. Reid's minority resigned, and a new Administration was formed, with Mr. Lyne as Premier, He had, with his party, previously assisted in passing the Federal Bill. Sir E. H. Wittenoom, K.0.M.G., has represented Western Australia as Agent-General in London from 1898.
