A well-attended meeting of ladies and gentlemen was held on Tuesday evening at St. Mary's Hall in relation to the formation of a Musical Society. Mr. F. L. Webster, who presided, explained what had been done at the preliminary meeting, and invited those present to decide whether or not a Musical Society should be formed. The response to this request was a resolution, carried unanimously, in the affirmative. Some discussion took place as to whether the name should be the Taranaki or the New Plymouth Philharmonic Society ; the latter, however, found most favour and was adopted. After passing the rules the following officers were elected; —President, Mr. F. h. Webster; Vice-Presi-dents, the Kev. F. G. Evans, Major Parris, Dr. Walker, and Mr. N. K. MacDiarinid ; Conductor, Mr. Fletcher; Secretary, Mr. Miller; Treasurer, Mr. W. J. Shaw; Librarian, Mr. Bannister; Committee, Messrs. G. 11. V.*... 3, A. B. R. Fookes, J. O. George.and Uoldsworth. The practice night was fixed for Tuesday at 7.30, A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman at the close of the meeting. It will be remembered that at the meeting of the County Council on the 7th May, Mr. Horrocks drew attention to the fact that the Junction Koad, from Durham Road to Tarata, had been gazetted a Government road and re-gazetted as a county road. A representative deputation was appointed to wait upon the Government and explain the inabiiny of the Council to metal the road unless aid >\as given by the Government, Messrs, B. Horrocks (representing the County Council), C. 0. Smith (Chairman of the Inglewood Town Board), J. Brown (Moa Road Board), and J. C. Clifford (on behalf of the Tarata settlers) formed the deputation which went to Wellington. We learn that as a result of their action the Government have undertaken to give an immediate subsidy of £2OO, and to consider the question of a further grant when framing the forthcoming Estimates. At the twenty-fourth annual meeting of the New Plymouth Investment and Loan Society, the following report was submitted and adopted:—"The directors have the pleasure to report that, notwithstanding a slight falling oft in the business during the past year, a satisfactory rate of interest has been placed to the crtdit of the investors. The retiring directors for the year are Messrs. W. F. Brooking and H. Weston, who offer themselves for re-election. Two auditors will have to be appointed by the meeting as usual." Messrs. VV. F. Brooking and H. Weston were re-elected directors, and Messrs. McKellar and Webster were appointed auditors at a remuneration of £l2 12s. An honorarium of £75 was voted to the directors, and a vote of thanks was passed to the Secretary. Ata meeting of the directors afterwards, Mr. H. Weston was re-elected chairman.

A Press wire from Wellington states that on the Queen's Birthday tne practice of having a sham fight betwc:-n volunteers will he departed from, and the clay will be spent in field-firing by companies, They will begin firing simultaneously, each on separate targets, tiring to be by volleys at the longer ranges, ending with independent shooting at 200 yards. Mr. 0. W. Hursthouse, of the Lands Department, will be appointed by the Government as a commissioner to ascertain the proportion of the cost of the Lower lianawatu Gorge bridge, which is to be contributed by each of the various local bodies interested.

| In the supplement of the Otago Daily I limes of Apiil 23rd is to be found a very interesting review of the rise and expansion of the Union S.S. Company. For close upon a quarter of a century the Company has been engaged in the work attendant on the development of this colony, and naturally has expanded greatly. Starting with five small steamers aggregating 2144 tons, it has to-day a fleet of 60 steamers of the most modern type, some being the finest models of naval architecture in the world. Tho excellence of the passenger accommodation and commissariat of the Company is well known. No little of its popularity is due to the unfailing courtesy of its representatives at every port and to the reputation for punctuality that it has justly earned.

We have received from Mr. McKimiou Bain a catalogue, which the Colonial Piano and Organ Company are issuing, ot Messrs. Wickins & Co.'s (New Bond-street, London) musical publications. It is a most complete and artistic production, which should serve as a work of reference to all musical people. As the Colonial Piano Company stock the numbers in the catalogue, a magnificent selection of music is available.
