THE RAILWAY CONCESSIONS.
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.I > Wellington, May 10, Speaking at the social at Masterton last night,the Hon. J. G. Ward said he recognised that it was the duty of the Government to return to the people of ! the colony as much as possible out of the earnings of the railways. With that view concessions would shortly be announced, which would show that the Government was sincere in its intention to use the railways for the benefit of the people as a whole. The Government would also endeavour to cheapen the cost of sending produce to the seaboard, In eulogising the land policy of Mr. McKenzie, he said the Government would acquire further estates for cutting up, and he held the opinion that any such land + akeu should bo i paid for to is* full v due. The Gorernjincat, he added, wnld continue ite ' endeavours to obtain chem money for setbrs. In concluding, the honourable; gtntlernan referred to the vastly increasing prosperity of the colony,
