THE CABLE QUESTION.
[PHB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received 10, 10.15 a.m.) Melbourne, May 10. Mr. Watt has received the full report of the Pacific Cable Board, The first objection taken to the Gape cable is that it would diminish the traffic of j the Pacific cable when completed. It is pointed oat that if the Pacific cable' obtained anything lika one-third of the | whole of the tiafiic—and it is estimated that it will in leality get five-twelfths of the business—the conditions on' which a progressive decrease of half-a-crown a word is promised by the Eastern Extension Company would never be realised, and mignt be practically disregarded. The Board contemplates a rate of two shillings for ordinary messages over the Pacific cable itself, and a through rate of three shillings, eo that the construction of the Pacific cable would probably secure the reductions offered by the Company
