They narrowly escaped falling into the hands of patrol parties. They travelled at night, unless thick bush afforded cover by day-time. They waded many swamps and rivers, and suffered severely through wet clothes and the intensely cold nights. Eventually they boarded, at night, a goods train for Delagoa Bay at the Water-
walonder Sid'ng, amongst bales of wool, covered by a tarpaulin. Kaffirs and the railway officials searched the trucks at Komati Poort, but the stowaways were not discovered.
