Summer has gone, and winter is near} After a long dry summer, rain set in on Good Friday, and it has been rain--1 ing more or less ever since, and feed is 1 still plentiful. Last month a number of Toko settlers went to the King Country to spy out the land. They then went on to Auckland to try their luck at the ballot. Only one section was drawn, and that was by Mr. F. A. Pearson, The amusing part of the affair was that one settler who quietly stayed at hong and sent on his application drew two sections, comprising nearly 1500 This was Mr. J. McQrath, of the Waiwiri Road. It pats one in mind of the well-known couplet in Hudibras ; " For whatsoe'er we pvrpulrata We do but ruo: We're steered by Kate." Our Debating Society has held its lirst meeting this season. The subject was: "Should Bachelors be taxed?" Mi*. Clark and Mr. Bain wore in their host form and spoke well. The vote was in favour of taxin.; bachelor^ Our school election i« over, and the [lersoancl of the committee is nearly the same as b»fue, viz., Messrs. J. Taylcr (chairman), H. Bayly, F. Bayly, W. L, Kennedy, George El'iott, and another. A respected se tier, Mr. Murphy, nad the misfortune to break his leg while going !tome with his trap, and is now in the New Plymouth hospital, vlicre it is to be hoped he will make a ■jood recovery. The new residence being built by >' r. J. Iline, on 15 acres of land, near he town, is almost completed, and will be an ornament to the place. A decided demand for suburban lota iias caused Mr. Moore, of Hawera, to sell two pieces—one seven acres and one eight acres—the price being £3O per acre, and the purch isers Mr. Brodie and Mr. Cartwright. Toko has apparently not done growing, as there are two new buildings going up The traffic on the Ease Roid is very gro.t, and promises in the near future to bo "normoun. A Toko boy, Mr. Kerr Maxwell, sails for South Africa this week as farrier for ths remounts. He was very popular, and has everyone's good wishes. • I hear Mr. Harry Bayly has bought 1000 acres from Mr. Matthews at £6 per acre. Advance, Toko! May sth.
