ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(PUB PBHSS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, April 24. The body of Joseph Cable, who was last seen alive on April 7th, was found in a whare at Te Kowhai in an advanced stage of decomposition. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned, and the coroner ordered the whare to be destroyed by fire and the body thus cremated in order to protect the public health. The remains are to be afterwards decently interred.
Dunedin, April 24. Patrick Burke, 19 years of age, engaged as surfaceman about the railway station, met with a serious accident when crossing the line through being knocked down by an engine He sustained a fracture of the base of the skull, and his chances of recsvery are small.
Later. Burke died at the hospital early this morning.
At an inquest touching the death of Patrick Burke, the jury returned a verdict that the deceased was accidentally killed by being run over by a railway engine. Deceased was one of the smartest men on the line, but, as one witness put it, he could not look everywhere at once, and while others saw his danger Burke did not realise that the whistle of the engine was intended for him. It was stated that it was dangerous to work in the yard except on Sunday and at night.
