TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board met on Wednesday. Present: Miss Hey wood, Messrs. Mackay, Faull, Wade, Allsworth, and Kennedy. In the absence of the' Chairman, Mr. Mackay presided, A new stove pipe for Ngaire School was sanctioned. The Architect was instructed to erect a brick chimney at Pembroke Road, the cost to be charged to the Building Fund. The Chairman's action re painting Kowan Road School at a cost of £7 was approved. A letter from the Bell Block Committee relative to work at Upland Road School was referred to the Architect to report. Consideration of a letter from the Lepperton School Commissioners was deferred; in the meantime the Commissioners are to state what amount of cost they will bear. A grant of .£8 was made to a shelter shed at Carrington Road, on cendition that the plan is approved and the work passed by the Architect. The teacher at Norfolk Rord applied for permission to shorten some of the long desks; also for two new door mats. He is to be informed that the application should come through the School Committee. The sum of five pounds was granted towards i.he cost of clearing the Denbigh Road School site. Several applications for lease of school sites were referred to the special Committee appointed to investigate school sites. The Paymaster-General notified that £1430 had been remitted to the Board as a grant for school buildings in newlysettled districts. A cordial vote of thanks was passed to the Minister of Education for the liberal response to the Board's reeent application. The Secretary of the Taranaki Branch of the Educational Institute wrote suggesting that a week's holiday should be granted between the midwinter and Christmas holidays, at a time to be agreed upon.—Consideration was deferred.

An extension of three weeks' leave of absence was granted to Mr. E B. Dowling, of Bird Eoad School.

Messrs. Allsworth, Kennedy and Mackay were appointed a committee to »cs with the chairman in conferring with tho Wanganui Board relative to the Whcnuakura University Reserve. A request from the Huiroa Committee that the boundaries of their district should be defiued was referred co Mr. Kennedy for his report. Messrs. Adlam, Mackay and McAllum were appointed a committee for selecting teachers during tho current year.

The Inspector laid before the Board the schedule of examination papers required at the pupil teachers' examina- I tion and inquired as to what portion of the work was to be done by the examiner to be appointed by the Board. The matter was referred to Messrs. Slackay and Faull for their report. The Inspector's adverse report on Ngaire School was referred to the Committee for their remarks. The report of the Ladies Sewing Committee was adopted. A copy is to be forwarded to each of the Oommitteesnamed therein, and those schools marked '• poor " are to be admonished. The Truant Inspector for the New Plymouth district (Mr. T. P. Lister) reported improvement in attendances. During the past quarter he served 39 final notices, making 240 for the year. Four cases had been brought before the Court and fined, and five others were pending. The Stratford Truant Inspector reported fewer cases requiring intervention last quarter than at any previous time. He drew attention to the large number of cases when children attended only the limit of times allowed by the Act, and suggesting raising the limit. The Chairman's annual report was adopted with thanks, and ordered to be printed. The Inspector's annual report was also adopted. Accounts were passed, and the Board rose.
