IN EXPLANATION.
TO THE BDITOR. : Sir,—ln Tuesday's issue of the News I see your Stratford correspondent has" put a very strange construction on our Band having played, among other selections, the " Dead March " on the occasion of the news of the relief of' Ladysmith. He says:—" The Band 1 played the Dead March as a protest against the authorities in hot accepting their plan of jubilation." Now, sir, I felt at first inclined to treat this matter with scorn, as I" cannot imagine how any man could put such an evil construction on an act committed out of the most profound respect for those brave fellows who have fallen whilst fighting for their country's cause and in sympathy with the bereaved ; but as I fear some of your might believe what is contained in that paragraph, it seems better to correct it. We all know that although we rejoice that a great victory has been gained for our dear Motherland, still a huge sacrifice has been required of many in order to obtain that victory; and who is so hardened as to refuse what little respect we can possibly show,' and so evil-minded as to put such a very mean and contemptible construction on that mark of respect? Thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc., F. A. Cramer, Hon, Sec. S.T.Bi*' Stratford, 'March 7.
