THE EFFECT OF THE BUBONIC PLAGUE.

AN INCREASE IN SHIPPING RATE 3. [PEB PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, March 8. Owing to the heavy loss involved through the quarantine restrictions now imposed upon steamers arriving in New Zealand from Australia, the Union Company find it necessary to raise the rates of passage money and freights. Pending more definite arrangements, the Sydney office has been instructed to charge the following increased rates for the Waikare, leaving that port on Saturday:—Saloon, 30s; steerage, 15s; and on cargo, 5s per ton. Passengers will also be required to pay for their maintenance during the time the ship is detained in quarantine—6s per day saloon, and 3s per day steerage. A new schedule of fares and freights is being prepared, providing for a general increase to and from all Australian ports.
