DEPUTATION TO HON. J. G. WARD RE POST OFFICE.

10 THE EDITOR. Sib, —Your report of the deputation to Hon. J. G. Ward re post-.il site does not convey very clearly which part of Harbour Board Reserve was submitted, f. wilJ, with your permission, briefly state which part of the Reserve was recommended by the deputation of the Chamber of Commerce. I would like lirst to point out that I was tho parson who set the ball rolling, by publicly advocating the Borough Reserve in Egraont and King streets for Postal and Customs. The majority of the members of the Chamber promised to support me. The Chamber appointed thoir deputation last week, and two of the appointed gentlemen informed me that they were going to recommend the I Borough Reserve. I was surprised to hear that at the eleventh hour they trotted out that portion of the Harbour Board Reserve in Brougham-street on

which Mr. Smart's shop stands and down towards the Union Shipping c ffico. I had interviewed the Mayor f.rd most of the Councillors, who exjn'csfced themselves favourable to the Department acquiring the Borough Itecive, providing they got land of equal value in exchango, Mr. J. Bellringer informed rue that it was a reserve for revenue purposes, and the refer vo can be dealt with, although the members of the deputation from the Chamber endeavoured to impress on the Hon. J. G. Ward that the reserve was tor a mechanics' institute, and could not bo dealt with. That portion on which the old Town Hall is being removed, too, is 6et aside " for a mechanics' institute." A Bill was passed through Parliament giving the Council power to deal with the balance of the reserve, which is about three chains in length and ono chain in width, sufficient to ciect Pos!, Telegraph, and Customs to suit New JPly- | iHO'.uh requirements for all time. I may have mare to say on this subject; MG-Auwhili', thanking you fjr giving me ' spr.w,—l am, etc., 1 G. Tiscn,
