NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.

SOCOBSS OK NEW PLYMOUTH ( OANDIDATJIB. v [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, March 7. At the University Senate, Sir G, M. j O'Rorke presented the repoit of the committee appointed to deal with a certain question arising out of the last C matriculation examination. It contained reference to a very serious 8 matter—an irregularity on the part of one of the matriculation candidates, ' who had obtained from a friend in ' Ohristchurch (whose name the alleged offonder refused to give) copies of ! certain questions out of the examination papers before the examination ' took place. The report of the com- ' mittee, which recommended that the { candidate's name be struck off the list of passes and the roll of the University, ' was fixed for consideration to-morrow, Professor Brown moved, '■ That tho next meeting of the Senate be held in November, 1900."—After discussion, the motion was lost. The Law Committee reported that the following candidates have passed the final LL.B. examination: —T. Jackson, E. B. Moore, 0. L. MacDiarmid, J. O'Shea, K, Neave, W, D, Stewart, R. H. Turton, 11. Vincent; that the following candidates have passed the second LL.B. examination in the subjects set opposite their names, subject to confirmation of the cable advice that they have passed also in Roman law and international law:— L. E. Williams, S. A, Atkinson, A, E, Bullock, J. Glasgow, and W. A. Izard, contracts and torts; Gt. H. Thomson, contracts and torts and practical procedure; that 0. E. Mackay (8.A.) has passed the first andsecond sections of the LL.B, examination in subjects contracts and torts and practice and procedure, subject to confirmation of cable advice that he has passed in jurisprudence, c institutional history, Roman law, and

international law. The following candidates have passed the first section of the solicitor's examination in the subjects set opposite their names: —Practice and procedure, H. A. Adams, 6. H. Buchanan, T. H, Dawson, H. F. Doogan, W. Foubister, E. T. Harper, F. J. Lynch, F. J. Tipping, W. E. Hackett; practice and procedure and contracts and torts, J, B, Christie, P. W. Jackson, J. R. Green, J. E. Barltrop, J. 0. > Lilly, F. J. Mouat. 1 Ttie following candidates have passed 1 the fiaal solicitor's examination :—A. r L. Arrowsmith, F, T, Bellringer, J, H. i Ixjglts, V. S. Short, W. G. Sjcauier- ■ ville, P. S, K. Macissey. As passes in individual subjects cannot be legally i recognised for matriculation purpose-*, 1 the committee is of opinion that such ' passes should not be recognised for purposes of the solicitor's general know- ' lodge examination; that tha Judges of the Supreme Court bo respectfully in- . vited to consider the advisability of t repealing Clause 19 (p. 140 of the ' calendar), as that clause is ia conflict with tbe existing requirements of the i University.

The committee appointed to consider correspondence with the English agont reported as follows:—The eximiuers in England, at tbeir meeting in February, 1899, decided to offer to this University a sum of £SO to constitute a scholarship, and they suggest that the scholarship should be awarded to the candidate who has tried for senior scholarship and been very near to the successful candidate. The committee understand that the examiners in England will probably have made an award or a suggestion for an award at their meeting in February of this year, and thoy think that the matter should be dealt with at a meeting of the Senate held when the written reports are received from England of the results of last examinations, An examiner in mathematics is required in succession to Professor Lamb. For tlie purpose of filling this vacancy, the Committee suggests the following names in order of preference :—E. J. Iljuth, E-:q., D.Sc., F.R.S., Cambridge; Professor Bryan, D.Sc., F.R.S., University College, Bangor; Professor Lohey, M.A., Royal Holloway College ; Professor Heath, M.A., Mason Science College, Birmingham. The report was adopted. A committee, to whom the matter was referred, recommended that drawing be added to the list of subjects tor mvtiiculation, and that the subject should consist of practical, plan 9, and bolid geometry, and either freehand drawing or model drawing. The report was adopted.
