BOEBS CROSS THE MODDER TO AVOID STARVATION. CRONJE'S REAR-GUARD BEING HARASSED. THE BOER FORCES EXHAUSTED. (Beceved 19,11.20 pjn.) Lohdok, February 19. The bulk of General Cronje's forces, in order to avoid starvation, crossed the Modder River towards Bloemfontein. General 'French twice charged through the minor section of the enemy north-west of Kimberley. General Kelly-Kenny is harassing General Cronje's rear-guard. The bluejackets worked their guns to advantage. The enemy moved from kopje to kopje, holding each as leng as possible to enable General Cronje's convoy to proceed. It moved slowly, and the unimnln were dead-beat when they reached Klipkaal Drift. General De la Bey (a Boer officer) disobeyed an order to retreat, and attaoked Jacobsdal on the 15th, despite the fact that the Red Cross was flying.
