PROPOSED SECOND VOLUNTEER CORPS.
The keen interest taken in the pro- j posal to form a second volunteer corps ( for New Plymouth was very decidedly f expressed by the exceptionally large j number of people who assembled in the j Council Chambers on Thursday night, t His Worship the Mayor presided, and, in his opening remarks, said the | recent eventsliad shown most distinctly f the necessity of having men drilled and j trained by military discipline, so that ] in the event of an emergency they might be ready to do what their country required of them. Mr. A. J3, Holmes proposed that a second volunteer corps be formed in New Plymouth. He read a letter from . | Captain Okey, of the Taranaki Rifla 1 Volunteers, signifying his interest and sympathy in the matter, and expressing willingness to assist in any way. v Mr. Paul expressed his surprise that 0 two corps had not been formed long a ago. fi The Mayor then put the resolution 01 to the meeting, and it was carried w unanimously. ft The following officers were elected:— Captain, Mr, L. M. Taunton; first lieutenant, Mr. J, Cook; second lieut- 81 enant, Mr. C. E. Hood. The compuny is to be known by tho title of " The Taranaki Guards." ' r A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. A. H. Holmes nud Sergeant Stagpoole for tho energy they F had displayed in bringing the movemejit to suuh a successful issue, Mr. Holmes was unanimously olected honorary secretary to the company.
