T SENT TO THE ffEW ZEALAND OFFICE OF THE mm siflfc ties secures to the sender of that preliminary subscription 'a plaofc in the distribution of The Timet Reprint of the ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA, Further monthly payments of one guinea each until tho subscriber has paid seventeen gnutets in all, competes the purchase. This is the present price of the 25 splendid velumes of the "Treasury of Knowledge," as the "Encyclopaediaßritannica" was happily described by the " Athenamm." The process by which prompt applicants may obtain the national work at this extremely low pries is a simple one. ONE. The order-form which appears at the foot of this column should be cut out, or a similar form obtained, by sending to the New Zealand Office of The Times (Wellington) a written request for the form. TWO. The order-form should be legibly signed in tho spaco indicated for tho subscriber's signature; the subscriber's address should be written in tho space provided for that purpose. If the books are to be delivered elsewhere than in Wellington the purchaser should add the name of the carrier in Wellington to whom delivery is to be made. Tho form thus completed should be sent to the publishers of the The Times accompanied by a remittance of one guinea. THREE. Upon receipt of the order-form and one guinea, the publishers of The Times will send to ths subscriber a receipt for the preliminary subscription. This receipt will bear a destinctare number showing the position on the list at which the subscriber's name has been in its turn inscribed. FOUR. As fast as the sets arrive from England they will be delivered to the subscribers, in the order in which the subscriptions are received. (A. supply of stock, to fill immediate orders, is now in hand Wellington). The entire 25 volumes wll be delivered all at one 'time, carefully sealed in a tin-lined case. No charge for packing. FIVE. On receipt of the 25 volumes a further payment of one guinea is to be made. SIX. On the corresponding day ojf each month thereafter a further payment of one guinea should be made until the transaction is closed. The process may be simplified by enclosing with the original application a cheque for the full amount, less the discount of One Shilling in the Guinea, making the price for the cloth binding seventeen pounds instoad of seventeen guineas, with the same proportionate l-eductioons for the better bindings. L. Courtney Edmund Ware Sir Fredk. Abel Gen. Maurice Grant Allen St. George Mivarfc R. Louis Stevenson John Addington Symonds Prof. Romanes To select in this fashion the names of but one contributor out of every score who collaborated opon the Encyclopedia Britannica is not an altogether satisfactory process. Yet, in reading over these names, one is, at any rate, impressed by the fact that tha contributors to the Encyclopaedia Britannica are not merely specialists with great information bot original thinkers. They arc the men who have themselves influenced our thoughts and beliefs, have directed, even created, contemporary taste and learning, Each one of the eleven hundred authors was invited to write for the Britannica because he possossed a special knowledge whioh did not lie within the competence of any among his colleagues. Snch dissimilarity among the writers is an essential merit in a work of general referonce, •nd there arises an almost grotesque incongruity when an attempt is made to think o£ such divergent capacities in the block. One common quality, however, binds the names just cited. The Encyclopaedia gave no hospitality to the sort of " harmless drudges " who used to compile works of reference when the world was younger. To the student of any special «t or science other names in the full roster might appeal with greater force, bat to every general reader this list of acknowledged celebrities will convey some sense of the distinction which characterises the contents of the volumes.
