Prior to the ultimatum, Genoral Buller had expressed himself satisfied with the proportion of cavalry arranged for, but in order to gratify the splendid patriotism of the colonies Great Britain would give the colonial troops an immediate place at the font. Th» Colonial Governments had ban invited to send manageable mnits of one hundred and twenty-fivt men. The Government's desire was to meet the wishes of the colonies, whose Legislatures had accepted the military disappointments in . a way that others nearer home might have imitated. He admitted that the maps at the disposal of tbe Generals did not-include tin territory between Ladyemith and Tugela, but promised early military reports. Sir Edward Grey denied that the assistance of the Opposition would cease with the expulsion of the invader* from British territwy. The debate would have collapsed only the Whips had arranged a division for Tuesday.
