OUR SECOND CONTINGENT.
THE GOVERNOR HEVIEWS THE :,I£K NAMES OF THE CONTTNGEYr. Welmxgtox, J-n.uary 18. His Excellency the Governor reviewed the contingont at Island Bay this morning. About 150 officers and men were present. There was a large attendance of spectators. Ihe men ■were put through various evolutions at tajfe, gallop and walk, and finished with a royal salute. They acquitted themselves very creditably, although a number of the horses were fractious. It is rather remarkable that, despite news from Africa of the first contingent substituting bone for brass buttons, the -* men of this contingent are all adorned with shining brass. It is understood that the Defence Department, say they have not official knowledge ot the alteration. At the cuuelusion uf tlie parade His Excellency brieliy addressed the men, and told them how their brothers in Africa had distinguished themselves, and cordially hoped they, too, would be able to do something to make themselves heard of in the annals of the country. Three cheers were given for the New Zealanders in South Africa, and the men then filed off to the camp. JWiXLK.Gtt,*, Jacuary 18. Mr. G. G. iiucad, cf Uhrisichurci 1 , has lvquorttd tlie Press Association to l_ publish the fiilowing:—•'Canterbury Y having definitely undertaken to provide and equip a troop of not less than e 50 mouDred men for S;uth Africa, it if 1 hoped ilut other provinces will fall k into line, and each similarly provide J and equip a mounted troop, so as to " make a third contingent of, say, 250 " men. Such a body, if composed of s hardy rough-rider-?, selected from * fanners, stock-driveis, boundiiry-riders, '■ rabbiters, mu-tsnr.- 1 , etc., should prove ' in a. hilly country like South ' Africa. Great Britain is not in need of money, but is much in need of hardy mounted men to do 1 scouting and outpost work, necessary to cover regular infantry in South Africa. Our Government having undertaken, on behalf of the Imperial Government, to accept contingents from all parts of the colony, provided the total number of men does not exceed 250, it is oarnestly hoped that the several provinces will rise to the occasion and show their public spirit by each providing their quota of the class of men so much required to help our kin in South Africa, Yours, etc, Geo. G. Stead, Ohriskhurcb, 17 th January, 1900."
