CONTROL CHANGED.
Inspectors of Traffic. Press Association—Copyright. Auckland, March 19. Arrangements have been completed for transfer to the central department of traffic inspectors at present under the control of the Main Highways Board, announced the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, at Hamilton to-night. As a result tTfghii officers will in future be attached to the Transport Department. “When I first investigated the road accident problem,” said the Minister, “I realised that the control of traffic on rural roads by over 600 local auitnorities was not appropriate to deal with modern motor traffic. This traffic Is now more of a national than of a local character and can be properly controlled only by a uniform and efficient national system operated by the Transport Department which is charged with the responsibility of administering the traffic laws.” Mr. Semple said he tonnd that in order to bring such a national system into operation lit would be necessary to finance it from revenue derived from drivers’ license fees, which at present went to the local authorities in rural areas.
