BACON AND PORK.
SMITHFIELD MARKET.
Pigs From Stratford Show Judged.
Results of London judging of pigs entered at the Stratford Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s spring show have been received by the secretary, Mr. W. F. Ross. Messrs. Borthwick and Sons.. Ltd., advised that Mr. W. H. Bunning of Midhirst, who secured a first prize at the show, was? first in the porker class. Mr. R. Chllcott of Frankton Junction, who was not placed at the show, was second. "The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company was also very close, but with one exception all the other entries were too lean and unfinlehed,’’ Messrs Borthwick stated. “Nearly all the pigs were a good weight and good colour, but they required that little extra covering of fat to make them ideal for Strdtlsfleld.” In the bacon class R. Chllcott, Frankton Junction. Was first and second. He war not placed at Stratlord. The one placed first on the books at Stratford, was third. It was entered by the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. "There seems to be a tendency to some irregular feeding even in showpigs,’’ Messrs. Menry Lane and Co., Ltd., wrote.
Certain pens were definitely fat for show’ pigs. Son’s of the sides would only make No. 2 selection bacon. Others were borderline sides, which might be either No. 1 or No. 5-selec-tion. Other pens showed squibbly un-der-fed stuff which did not carry enough finish. A good feature of all the sides was the nice plump average of the gammons'. The poor features were the tendency towards Heavy
shoulders, disproportionate to the rest of the side, which may be caused by breed as well as bj feed; and the backs, which to the extent of perhaps 25 per cent, of the tides, showed a lack of lean meat in proportion to fat.
Arrangements were being made to have 109 show e<des cured out as one lot and in due course details would bo supplied of the selection and realisation as bacon of the entire 109 tides together. Autumn Show Prizes. Points prizes in the Pig Section ot the Autumn Show have been awarded as follows: Purebred Berkshire: H. C. Taylor and Sons, Ngaere; Tamworth. S. Ogle, Normanby; Large Black, Mrs A. B. Oliver, Lepperton; Large White, W E. Hollard Paponga.
