HOUSING SCHEME.
Landowners Raise Objection. Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, M-arch 12. Strong objection to the intention of the Government to take land at Taita, in the Hutt Valley, for housing purposespbses was raised by a 'meeting of 80 owners and residents. Four points of the objection were confainad in a motion which was- carried unanimously and is to be forwarded Io the Government. Objections to the proposal are: 1. These lands comprise one of the few areas reasonably close to Wellington City and are entirely suitable for market gardening. Their high market value and their use for market gardening purposes for many years past show that this is the case. 2. The lands at present have no transport facilities.' by rail and no sewerage. To provide these will require a considerable capital expenditure which could 'be avoided, as regards rail transport in. any case, by taking land elsewhere.
3. If these lands- are taken an industry of value to Wellington > City will be seriously affected, and the mfa-rWetj (Coonleerned will have difficulty in finding suitable areas anywhere reasonably close to Wellington City. 4. For housing purposes ample areas are available at Tawa Flat, Upper Hutt and the Wainul Valley. The first two areas are served by the railways and, in any case, all three areas of land could be- obtained without disturbing any man from his home or place of business.
