A number of distinguished visitors to New Zeaand were .the guests of the Government as a State luncheon in Pariament Buildings to-day. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Ml J. Savage, presided. The guests., were Captain the Rt. Hon. Sir Basil Brooke, C.8.E., M.C., Minister of Agriculture for Northern Ireland, and Lady Brooke, Senator the Hon. A. J. McLachlan, Postmaster-Gener-al of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Mrs McLachlan and the Hon. H. J. T. Hyland, aselstant-Minister of Agriculture in Victoria. In extending a welcome to the visitors the Prime Minister mentioned the ties of kinship and tradition that bound the Empire countries together and the value of meeting people face to face. He referred to the coming Imperial Conference and said that all their interests.: were common and their objectives were much the same and when they got together around a conference table he was optimistic enough to think that they would aTm for even bigger things and. accomplish more than was ever accomplished in the history of the British Empire. In reply Sir Basil Brooke said there was no difference between any Britisher in any part of the Empire. They were all influenced by the feeling that in democracy they were fostering the most useful creation of any empire. It was the greatest influence for good and the greatest influence for peace. Senator McLachlan and Mr Hyland added their appreciation of the courtesy extended to them, Mr Hyland paying a high tribute to the manner In -which the Government was tackling the unemployment problem, particularly its placement scheme.
