The conditions are similar to those introduced recently in Wellington, and they come into force as from yesterday. The new terms are as follows: (1) Preference to unionists; (2) the orchestra to be engaged two nights per week for a period of three hours each night in the studio or elsewhere; the nights of engagement to be arranged by the conductor with the studio manager; (3) the rates of pay to be £1 per night for ordinary players, but the special rate now paid to certain players and the conductor to continue; (4) extra performance nights to be on the foregoing basis; and (5) extra rehearsal nights of three hours, concluding not later than 11 p.m., should be paid for at the rate of three-quarters of the ordinary payment. Mr Savage points out that it is to be understood that the arrangements are to be regarded a,s temporary and not to prejudice either side in future negotiations.
