NOTES ON THE RACING.
There were eleven starters for the Maiden Race. Backers, went for the Blenheim bracket (Pitch JDark and Pahaka) and Emigre, a tr«mle winner at Takaka. Pitch Dark played up at the post, and got left. Jean Gluten was prominent to the straight entrance, where Prince Mark worked his way through and scored nicely from Lady Lticnllus. v Prince Mark is traineS. by C Pritchard at Trentham for a Masterton patron, and the runner-up is trained by his brother at Opaki. Pacific Slope dwelt at the start in the Cup and was toiling hopelessly in the rear all the way. Lady Middleton was prominent for sis - furlongs, where she gave way to Spangle and Esperance. As they swung into the straight the tAvo light-weights were in front, Imari'bbon being handy on the rails. The favourite made an effort in the straight and headed Spangle, but could not reach Esperanqe, who won well. Eose Pink was beaten off, and Pacific Slope was still at the tail end of the field when they passed the winning-post. Esperance is a stable-mate of the Maiden winner and is owned in Seddon. She is a full sister to Mascot, and has won at_the last three meetings she has competed at. Three withdrawals from the Hope Hack Welter field reduced the runners to five. Three of them are trained by C. Pritchard. The most fancied was Red Signal, who was well enough placed, but failed under the heavy weight at the finish. Dick, who was absohytely last three furlongs from home, finished best and won nicely from Red Signal, with Restful in the other place. Zela finished last. The three place-getters ran in separate interests. Dick is owned by Mr J. J. Corry, of Blenheim. Rebekah was not produced in the Stewards' Handicap, biit all the other acceptors' were paraded. Trentham Rose and Sweet Memory were out in front making the pace. The former dropped back beaten a furlong from home. Here Rawakore challenged Sweet' Memory, 'but- the latter won handily. Tantalus beat Damien for third place. This made the fourth winner from C. Pritchard's stable.
.Restful, Jean Gluten, and Alisamon! were-brought out again In'the Telegraph; Handicap. The Blenheim-owned Bar-; leycorn, who had been responsible for good track work, was sent out a big fa-! vourite. He was in a good position throughout, and won nicely from Galore, with War Tax close up. Barleycorn is a full brother to John Barleycorn, and scored his only previous win at the Wairarapa-at New Year time. . i Lady Middleton and Tantalus were making their second appearance in the Welter Handicap, for which Matty was a strong public fancy. She won well from Lady Middleton, who put tip a good race considering she appeared hopelessly out of it after they had gone two furlongs. Had .she been reserved for this race she might have won. Matty is trained at Trentham by J. Ayres. Two other Trentham-trained horses in Prince Delaware and Revocation finished among the also started ' division.
The two trotting events brought out big fields, and were the medium of gooa specukition. Jn the Maitai Trot (harness) backers went for JNeut, who failed to .get off the mark, and thus extinguished any chance he had. My Lass lopt her driver after they had gone a couple of furlongs. The "scratch horse, Palmdale, went well for a mile and a half, where he was running second to Rita Rye, who went steadily throughout and won fairly easily from Zita, who had no difficulty m passing Palmdale in the straight. Neut was brought out again in the Wai-iti. Trot (saddle). He and Little Ben were responsible for a solid pace, the latter failing to see the journey out. My Lass, who was always well placed, passed Neut in the run home. War Lord went steadily and finished in third place. An,objection was lodged against Neut, but after hearing it the stewards decided not to disturb the judge's piacings. _ ■ Following are details of tbe racing:—
