INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

MARKED DECREASE IN

INFLUENZA

Mr H. Coltman, the Health Inspector) submitted ths following report on infectious diseases to yesterday's meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board: Nelson City.—There- has been a marked decrease in the number of cases of influenza notified, 280, as compared with 497 for the previous month of

January. The pneumonic cases were very few compared with the number notified, although the latter cases were very much more severe, five having terminated fatally. Four cases of diphtheria have boon reported, three of which have been removed to hospital for treatment, and another case of tubercular disease lias been admitted to the Annexe for treatment.

Motueka Borough.—Four Cases of diphtheria and one of abdominal tuberculosis have been notified; the latter case terminated fatally. No cases of influenza have been reported from this borough, although there is evidence that severe colds have affected many.

Waimea County.—During the present month influenza has been very noticeab'e from Hope through the Wakefield, BeJgrovo, Tsipawera, and Korere districts as far as Rainy River, 81 cases having been reported, eight of which were pneumonic. Three cases of diphtheria have been reported from Neudorf, Umukuiri, and Hau, two of which have been fatal. From inquiries it is evident that for some time past there has been si mild epidemic of sore throats throughout the Motucka district.

Collingwood County.—This district has undoubtedly suffered similarly to •others, but very few cases have been notified. This is undoubtedly due to tbxj resident medical attendant having "been laid aside with influenza himself for several weeks. Nine notifications have been received during the past few days.

Takaka County.—Mild cases to the number of 14 have been notified during February from Motupipi, Awaroa, Aorere, East Talvaka, and Takaka. There has also been one case of diphtheria and one of opthalmia neonatorium.
