18th REGIMENT BAND CARNIVAL.

The carnival held in '.the Botanical Reserve, under the auspices of the 12th Regiment Band in -afti o f the fund to enable the band to take part in this jear's centest at Dunedin," proved a substantial success, there being a very satisfactory attendance during the day; and a big crowd came on^o the ground ia the evening. There was no dearth ol attractions, and throughout the day fhe children especially had a real good time witli side shows, games, an<3 sports. There were also a number of stalls, those assisting thereat being as follows:— Tea kiosk: MesSames Rolnson, A E Tasker, Brundell, and Miss Wastney. , Produce stall: Mesdames Walter Snodgrass. Kemp, and H. R. Bensemann, and Mips Hilda Fdmondson Jce cream stall: Mrs F. N. Jones. Misses Tomlinson, "I. Johnson, and E Thrown. Soft drinks stall: Mrs E. Ebbett. Fairy well: Mrs Jacka and Miss Burnes. Christmas tree: Mrs T. Johnson and Mrs J. G. Carpenter. The ladies in charge of the tea kiosk wish to express their indebtedness to Mrs G. Bennett, who volunteered to do thfc washing up, which was no small undertaking. > The band and the committee assisting especially thank the ladies who assisted at the stalls nnd in other ways, their aid being invaluable, and among those who should &>c mentioned is Mrs last Harris, who threw open her house, adjoining the. grounds, for the benefit of the ladies running tha tea kiosk, ■which proved a veryereat convenience^ in the preparation of tea, etc. Tlio side shows included the trAero nave" merry-go-round. A feature of the procession was the Delco-Li^hti Villa, a snug little house on wheels \ Jighted by a Delco electric installation, i The Delco apparatus also provided the! light for the grounds, which presented : a pretty sight. The side shows were i able to resume business and did a roar- ■ ing trade all the evening. The "circus" band added its quota to the jollity which prevailed, and there was a short musical and general programme, to which Miss Taylor and Messrs Taylor, Aydon, sen.. Aydon, jun -> Huggins, Oakley! McEw^n, and Hughes contributed, and the hand gave selections both afternoon and evening. . , The never-failin.rr attraction for the youngsters, the "Darktown Fire Brigade, Tvas seen in action, and a fireworks display brought the carnival to a close. The men's committee, assisting and members of the band worked hard! throughout," and well deserved the sue-! cess achieved. Special mention is due' t»i Mr F. N. Jones, who "both in preparation for the carnival and during the day was indefatigable. -
