A FATAL MINE ACCIDENT.
INQUIRY AT BLENHEIM.

Blenheim, Feb. -24.
The Warden's inquiry into t&e ■accident which occurred at I>h.e Dominion minej.Wakamarina', on December 14th, resulting in the death of L. J. Humphries, was commenced at Blenheim today. The Magistrate, Mr. Hollings, sat as "Warden, the assessors being Messrs Thomas Sullivan and M. Fagan. Mr. Downie, mine inspector, sought to show that responsibility lay with the mine manager, who should have insisted upon the proper timbering of the rise where the fatality occurred, or barred anyone entering it. Counsel for the mine manager contended that his client liad no authority tot control the actions of Humphreys, who practically was the owner of the mine. The Warden said the question was whether there was sufficient evidence to justify the cancellation of the mine manager's certificate. Decision was deferred pending a visit to the mine..
