GOVERNMENT HOUSING SCHEME.

Wellington, Feb. 23. liieerectaon of houses by the Labour l>epartment under the Government's nousing scheme is proceeding in various Darts of New Zealand, and some good .progress is being made. The portion of the scheme relating to the erection of houses by local bodies, on the other haad, is being held up by the Jack of Government advances. Many applications have been made under this portion of the Act, and most of them h^ve been very large. Christehurch. <£Jjy Council, for example, wants t-JOOjOOO, and the Wellington municipal authorities a similar gum, The Prime Minister stated yesterday that tiie Government could "not lend more than- £10,000 at one time on a single application.
Wellington; Feb. 24. The Prime Minister to-day gave a reporter information regarding the advances to local bodies under the Government's housing scheme, saying that the applications and inquiries received from local bodies had represented a total sum of £405,000; The applications that had been entertained by the Government totalled £75,000.
