NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

w Westport, Feb. 23. The memoers of the .Nelson Education Board arrived here on Saturday. During their stay they have visited*various schools in the Denniston, Millerton, Kixramea, and Westport districts, and discussed educational matters with the committees.

The board held its monthly meeting this evening, and the following business was transacted:—

A deputation was received from the Westport School Committee, who welcomed the board to their district and thanked it for the efforts it had made regarding the erection of a Technical High School, expressing the hope that tenders will he invited immediately.

lhe chairman in replying, stated that ho hoped the plans and specifications would be advanced sufficiently to admit of calling for tenders at the next meeting of the board.

The appointment of the Health Inspector as truant officer was confirmed, the consent of the Public Health Department and local hospital committee having been obtained.

The chairman was authorised to interview the department in the matter of increasing tne boarding allowances 10s weekly for children living in the country and who h:td obtained proficiency certificates to continue their education at a hiVh school.

Miss Kingsland was appointed as itinerating instructor in cookery, dressmaking, and millinery^for the first three months at Rceiton, and then proceeding to Motueka and Takaka. " °

The committees in those centres are to bo asked to arrange apt instructors for woodwork classes. ■*•

A letter was received from the Education Department, declining to anthor--I S.P a grant for the erection of a school at Mkwnera-iti.—The board decided to visit the district to-morrow. .The-chairman was authorised to interview the department regarding the proposed teacher's residence at Stoke. lhe board adjourned, and will resume at■ Keeiton to-morrow, aft-er visitin" schools in that district.
