HEAVY FIGHTING.

[Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

(Received Feb. 22, 11.5 p.m.) London, Feb. 18. A War Office communique states that the Bolshevists delivered a general attack on the Lake Man.itch-Sea of Azov front. Repeated vigorous attacks between Lake Manitch and the Tsarit-sin-Ekaterinodar Railway have not made appreciable progress, but westward of the railway they forced their way, across Lake Slaniteh, and occupied some miles of the line southward of the river. The Reds are attempting to force Lake Manitch against the Bon Army. Between Lake Mechetnoi and the confluence of the Don and Lake Manitch the attack failed; with heavy losses. Herethe ice broke, and a retreating column was engulfed. Cossacks at some, points crossed on the heels of the Bolshevists and pursued them for some miles, inflicting heavy losses. A particularly violent Red attack was made against the Don Army southeast of Rostoff. After hea-vy fighting all da.y long Volunteers cleared theentire south tank, except a%- one point. They took 1000 prisoners.
