ALLIES AND AMERICA.
POINTED ITALIAN COMMENT,
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)
Paris, Feb. 16. The London correspondent of the "Echo do Paris" states that M. Mdllerand and Mr Lloyd George, in' reply to President Wilson, declared that they would abide by the solution of the Adriatic problem which they notified to Jugo-Slavja in January. Mr Lloyd George, acting as president of the Peace Conference, wrote to M. Trumbifch, the Jugo-Slav Foreign Minister, emphasising the point that unless Jugo-Slavia accepted a compromise the Treaty of London would be carried out.
London, Feb. 18. It is understood that the Allies' reply to President Wilson expresses the hope that the Allies will soon see America represented at the Conference, but the reply points out that it is not possible for the Allies, during America's abstention, to delay settling vital questions gravely affecting the nationalities of Europe.
Rome, Feb. 19. President Wilson's Adriatic pronouncement caused a sensation in Italy.
The "Comoro Delia Sera" states that it is intolerable that this American phenomenon should decide regarding the destinies of the human race, and that the "sick raan'of America" should prescribe for the sick nations of the world. It is also the business of England and France ir> say whether they will tolerate this offence to their presV tige.
Other newspapers generally comment along these lines.
Washington, Feb. 16. According to the "Tribune," it is felt tha,t resignations of Ministers have strengthened the Republican senators' stand regarding the Peace Treaty and weakened the Democrats. It is now expected that the Republicans will not offer any further concession .for Treaty compromises.
